As my husband and I pulled up to the parking lot I lamented that I wished I had brought my camera. My husband said that it’s good that I didn’t because we would look like tourists. Turns out half the people there brought cameras. This outing is an annual event sponsored by the Sierra Club to “honor mother earth and our earth mothers” as our guide, Phil, said. If we go next year, I’ll definitely bring a camera! We saw lots of wildflowers that I already knew about, but also many that I either never heard of or never saw before: Trillium, Wake Robin, Nodding Trillium, Wild Ginger, Phlox, Yellow and Blue Violets, Meadow Sweet, Wild Geraniums (my favorites), Spring Beauty, May Apple, Wild Strawberry, Jack in the Pulpit, Skunk Cabbage, Meadow Rue, False Solomon’s Seal, Mustard, and Garlic Mustard, and a few others that I can’t remember the names to. We even saw a woodpecker and a tanager.
Although Phil said it was going to be 2 hours long and 3 miles, the shortened route we took ended up being 3.5 hours and it seemed longer than 3 miles. I would highly recommend this outing to anyone who loves nature. However I would caution against going on the second leg of the journey if you are out of shape. The first part is a very slow hike on fairly flat land, stopping often to look at the flowers. The second half is a faster hike up and down hills. I’m definitely out of shape because it didn’t take me long to be out of breath and for my leg muscles to hurt. Even the bottoms of my feet hurt! Very tiring, but well worth it!
